The legend of
the sacred Lucia
In a legend from the 13th century it is told that Lucia
was a devout Christian 13-14 years old virgin from
Syracuse on Sicily who suffered the martyrdom on the
13 of December 304.
Her name comes from the Latin word lux, which
means light. She is the saint of the light, the protector
of the blinds and the weak-sighted and is called upon
be the Christians, who suffer from a disease of the
throat.
According to tradition Lucia's mother suffered from a
mortal disease of the stomach that nobody could cure.
As a last resort the twelve-year-old daughter and her
mother went to a pilgrimage to visit the grave of the
holy Agatha in Catarina. Her Lucia prayed for her
mother, and the miracle happened. The mother was
cured for her disease, and in return for this Lucia
decided to enter a convent to live in chastity and to
devote the rest of her life to Jesus Christ.
Lucia had such beautiful eyes that they bewitched
